Regular contributor Anol Alias has alerted us to a curious white Volkswagen Polo which has appeared at JPJ Putrajaya. It is quite different from the Polo TSI that’s on sale right now by Volkswagen Malaysia.
Other than the low spec alloy wheels, we noticed silver headlamps as opposed to the Polo TSI’s black-tinted headlamps, a different alloy wheel design, drum brakes on the rear wheels as opposed to disc brakes, and Volkswagen badging on the rear, a feature also found on the CKD Polo Sedan. The rear bumper is also different – there’s no cut-out on the left side for an exhaust tailpipe to be visible. Also absent is TSI badging. There are side indicators on the fender while the Polo TSI has none. In the interior, the seats also look different, with vertical stripes on the chair instead of a horizontal design.
The specs look more basic compared to the Polo TSI on sale right now, and the lack of rear disc brakes lead us to believe this might be a normally aspirated version of the Polo, which is on sale in India as the Polo Petrol. The normally aspirated 3 cylinder 1.2 litre engine produces 75 PS at 5,400rpm and 110Nm at 3,750rpm. The Polo Petrol in India is only available with a 5-speed manual while this car seen at JPJ has an automatic gearbox – probably a 6-speed automatic like the gearbox in the Polo Sedan.
Could Volkswagen Malaysia be looking to introduce a car that’s more affordable than the upcoming reduced price RM87k CKD 2014 Polo Sedan? Could a non-TSI Polo hatchback be priced at under RM80k to give the CKD Jazz a run for its money?
