Mazda6 SkyActiv-D is the first diesel car to win at Indy

Mazda6_SkyActiv-D_racecar_00

A Mazda6 SkyActiv-D Clean Diesel race car won the Grand-Am-Brickyard in the GX class last weekend, becoming the first ever diesel-powered car to win at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sylvain Tremblay was behind the wheel of the winning car in the three-hour race.

This win was the fifth in a row for Mazda and has seen them move ahead of Porsche after eight of 12 races in the Grand-Am GX manufacturers championship race. If all goes Mazda’s way, it’s set to bag its 24th class win in the American endurance classic, the most recent wins being in 2008 and 2010.

The winning Mazda6 was propelled by a production-based 2.2 litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel engine. The term ‘production-based’ is not misleading in this case (though it often is), as the motor has a 51% stock by parts count, including the same engine block used in the production cars.

Mazda chose this approach rather than using a pure race-engine because it delivers the most “honest way to demonstrate the quality, durability and reliability” of its cars. Well, I guess honesty really is the best policy.

Panasonic unveils 16MP Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds camera, 45mm f/1.2 Leica Nocticron lens

Panasonic unveils 16MP Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds camera, 45mm f12 Leica Nocticron lens

There's not much to reveal about Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GX7 since it leaked (nearly) in full just days ago, but now it's official. This 16-megapixel Live MOS shooter is Panny's latest Micro Four Thirds offering aimed squarely at prosumers. This retro-styled camera is a much svelter option than the video-focused GH-3 ($1,500) thanks to its magnesium alloy casing. Along with in-body image stabilization and a swift shutter that tops out at 1/8000th of a second, the ISO tops out at 25,600. If video is your concern, it'll capture 1080p footage at 60 fps (24 Mbps) in AVCHD.

While the GX7 will burst shoot with autofocus tracking at 4.3 fps, its electronic shutter lets it hit 40 fps if pure speed is what you're after -- while we're on it, the shutter will also operate in a silent mode. Notably, a vertically-tiltable 16:9 Live View Finder is onboard, packing a resolution of 2.76 million dots and the ability to fire off the autofocus once it detects an eye. Two control dials aid in manual settings along with a rear-facing LCD touchscreen, which tilts up to 80-degrees. If all that wasn't enough, built-in WiFi and NFC allow for the likes of remote viewfinder apps and sharing media.

The GX7 will hit the US this November in a silver and black colorway priced at $1,100 with a 14-42mm kit lens, and $1,000 for just the body itself. A sleathier all-black variant will also be available, though only in Japan. Aside from the camera, a new Lumix lens with Leica tech will also hit shelves, offering a 45mm focal length with a speedy f/1.2 aperture -- the fastest in the lineup to date. Hit the press releases after the break for more details.

WSJ: Apple to use Samsung retina displays on next iPad mini

WSJ Apple to use Samsung retina displays on next iPad Mini

Earlier this month, there was a rumor that Apple was facing possible delays with its next-gen iPad mini due to supplier issues with an (also rumored) next generation Retina display. Now WSJ is reporting that Apple may have gotten around the problem thanks to, of all companies, Samsung. The ubiquitous "people familiar with the matter" told the journal that Cupertino originally wanted to be supplied solely by LG Display and Sharp for the high res screens (likely to be the same 7.9 inches as the current model). However, to ensure enough supply, Apple has reportedly been forced to resort to Samsung's display division for the next iPad mini, too. It bears noting that such supplier leaks are often unreliable, and as we've mentioned before, Apple frequently tests components before deciding on a final design. If it proves true, though, it would show that despite its best efforts, Apple can't make a clean break from its frequent sparring partner.

SPYSHOTS: Is this the next-gen Suzuki Alto?

Suzuki Alto 3

This little city car was recently spotted by our spy snappers on a trailer in sunny southern Europe. According to CarPix, the car wears “typical Suzuki” camouflage (super anorak moment there).

Plus, its diminutive dimensions, along with the fact that the current-gen Alto is now four years old, suggest that it might be the next-gen Suzuki Alto or, if another nameplate is going to be used, the Alto’s replacement.

Rumour has it that Suzuki’s new A-segmenter, when it debuts next year, will replace the current Alto and the Splash, and that it’ll be closer in size to the latter than the former. However, it’ll reportedly be lighter than the sub-tonne current Alto, and could likely come with a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine that emits only 80 grams of CO2 or so per km.

Imgur for iOS arrives with an endless supply of distractions

Slackers unite! Imgur for iOS is now here, giving you one more reason to shirk your responsibilities rather than tackle your to-do list. The release looks an awful lot like the Android version, but don't let that stand as a deterrent, because there's plenty of functionality to enjoy. This includes the ability to upload, submit and vote on images, and even manage your albums and account. You can also browse images by ranking or what's gone viral, and then share them via email, SMS and Twitter. If anyone (such as your boss) gives you guff for spending too much time on Imgur, just remind 'em that happiness is good for productivity. Couldn't hurt, anyway.

Watch Terrafugia's Transition fly and drive in public for the first time (video)

DNP Terrafugia first flight

Sure, the Terrafugia Transition took to the skies for the first time at the 2012 NY Auto Show, but it has yet to fly and drive in front of an audience -- until now. The "driveable plane" did two laps around the field at this year's EAA AirVenture airshow in Wisconsin, once up in the air and once on land, as you can see in the videos past the break. In between the laps, it transforms from an airborne into a land vehicle by automatically folding its wings flush against its body. Despite the successful demo, it'll take a while before we see a Transition on the road -- Terrafugia plans to build a third prototype of the $279,000 plane / car before it begins production. Millionaires and supervillains, take note: you can pay a $10,000 reserve fee for one, but don't expect it to grace your driveway or hangar until 2015 or 2016.

SPYSHOTS: Updated LR Discovery 4 SDV6 is M’sia

land-rover-disco4-jpj-0009

Is it SUV season in JPJ Putrajaya? Parked nearby the massive Mercedes-Benz GL 500 we showed earlier was this equally imposing Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 in its latest updated form. Special thanks goes to regular contributor Anol Alias for spotting these two behemoths.

What’s new about this Disco 4, I hear you ask? Just a few bits and pieces really, but very important ones. Peeking into the interior shows a new Jaguar-style rotary gear selector, which means it’s connected to the newer eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox rather than the outgoing six-speeder that had a huge gear knob.

The mild update includes a revised engine along with the new transmission. The 3.0 turbodiesel V6 engine now makes 255 hp, up from the previous 244 hp, while torque stays the same at 600 Nm. With two extra cogs, fuel consumption improves from 10.6 to 11.2 km per litre, and CO2 emissions are down by 14 g/km to 230 g/km.

Other changes include a new set of controls for the Terrain Response functions (now with rocker switches rather than the old chunky dial), revised suspension and steering set up plus new-design 19-inch wheels. Look out for a local launch very soon, perhaps together with the updated Land Rover Freelander 2 we saw here last week.

Google Calendar for Android gets cross-device notification sync

Google Calendar for Android gets crossdevice notification sync

The simplest updates are sometimes the best. See the latest update to Google Calendar for Android as an example: the release adds notification syncing between Android devices, saving the trouble of clearing multiple alerts while hopping from tablet to phone and back. That's the only major addition, but it could represent a big time saver for anyone with a busy schedule. If you're in that camp, you can grab the new Calendar now through Google Play.

Nintendo to enable eShop game purchases via PCs and smartphones

Currently, if you want to buy that hot new Super Mario Bros game your coworkers have been talking about, you need to wait until you could get home, power up your Wii U, launch eShop and then purchase it. That long process could become much shorter, however, if Nintendo follows through on a recent report from NicoNico (translated by Siliconera ) that it plans to open up eShop access to PCs and smartphones as well. Dan Adelman, Nintendo's Business Development Manager, confirmed with Joystiq that users would be able to log on to eShop remotely, buy the game, set it up for download and it'll be right there on their console when they get home. Hopefully this update arrives prior to October, so that Link fans among us can get a head start on downloading that new Zelda game before everyone else.

Nissan GT-R Nismo to hit 96 km/h in just two seconds

NISSAN-GT-R-5841

Next to nothing is known of the upcoming Nissan GT-R Nismo, at least not solid facts. Rumours are aplenty though, and the latest one coming from Auto Express is that it’ll cover the zero to 96 km/h (60 mph) sprint in two seconds flat. Yes, two.

If the astonishing claim is true, that will make it the fastest accelerating production car ever, beating the 1200 hp Bugatti Veyron Super Sport that needs 2.4 seconds to get to 96 km/h (100 km/h in 2.5 seconds). Talking about giant-killing performance.

The current 545 hp GT-R’s time of 2.7 seconds is incredible enough, so for the Nismo version to substantially improve on it seems scarcely believable. As will all go-faster models, the super GT-R is likely to get more power (over 570 hp) and less weight.

Williams Advanced Engineering (a division of the British F1 team) is deeply involved in the GT-R Nismo’s development, with one engineer telling AE, “You’d be surprised at how much room for improvement there is – even with a car like the GT-R.”

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has already gone on record saying that the GT-R Nismo will be ‘special’. Two seconds; yup, that’s special alright.

UK's O2 launches 4G service August 29th in London, Leeds and Bradford

Soon enough, the UK will have more than one choice for 4G data. Come August 29th, O2 will offer LTE in London, Leeds and Bradford, with expansion plans for an additional 13 cities by year's end. Rates start a £26 per month -- current provider EE's cheapest is £21 -- and you get a 30 day "Happiness Guarantee" when ordering directly from O2. If that isn't enough of an incentive to buy direct (and pay a higher monthly price), the service provider is throwing in 12 months of free music content too. Keeping with the music theme, the telco is hosting a launch concert at its Sheperd's Bush Empire venue, and will stream it to billboards across London. Who's headlining the event is anyone's guess at this point, as are full details on data package speeds, bandwidth caps and other pricing tiers.

Google reportedly testing 'hyper-local' news card for Now

Google reportedly testing local news card for Now

According to a report from Quartz, Google is preparing to launch an improved local news card in Now. The card would be an extension of its existing local news offerings, but would bring those stories directly to your handset based on your location. Quartz confirmed the card's existence through Johanna Wright, the vice president of search and assist at Google. She described the card as be "hyper-local," with granularity down to individual neighborhoods. According to Wright, the card is only being tested internally right now, and there's no guarantee of when, or even if, Google will actually bring it to the public.

In many ways Now is meant to be a filter for the absurd amount of information constantly at your fingertips. It's supposed to deliver only the information you need, when you need it. Problem is, Google still seems to be figuring out just what information you need at any given moment. Bus schedules, boarding passes, traffic reports, tourist attractions, calendar appointments, sports scores... the depth of data served up is growing more intimidating with every day. Now already delivers links to news stories that you're following on your desktop. The logical next step (we suppose) is to serve up articles you didn't know you were interested in, based on your location. We've reached out to Google for comment and confirmation, and we'll update this story if we hear back.

Canon's 1080p Legria mini camcorder makes it easy to film... yourself

Canon's 1080p Legria mini camcorder makes it easy to film yourself

Though we got tired of the word "selfie" in about 1/8000th of a second, it's true that snapping yourself can be tricky, especially on video. Canon wants to aid and abet such vanity with the Legria mini, a 1080p camcorder with an ultra-wide angle lens, flipscreen and built-in stand. To make sure that we, er, you look as good as possible, Canon's equipped it with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, DIGIC DV 4 processor, 12.8-megapixel still shooter, stereo audio and 160 degree wide lens (170 degrees for stills). You'll also get built-in WiFi, an iOS app, DLNA support, time-lapse, slow motion and mirror image recording and playback. There's even a decidedly HTC Zoe-like feature which takes a four second video when you snap a photo, and assembles them together when you're ready. All of that should help keep your Vine, Video on Instagram and other filmic pipelines full. Check the PR and video after the break for more.

Samsung preps Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S4 Mini variants with seamless dual-mode LTE

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S 4

It hasn't been easy to bridge differing LTE network types in one phone; ZTE's attempt requires a reboot, for example. Samsung claims to have solved that problem with new dual-mode LTE versions of the Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy S4 Mini. Both devices can switch between the common FDD-LTE standard and TDD-LTE without restarting, and they'll automatically hand over any ongoing data sessions or voice calls. The advantages are potentially huge for both roaming and bandwidth -- travelers are more likely to stay on 4G, and providers running both FDD and TDD can switch customers to whatever network has the most capacity. Samsung hasn't said where and when the dual-mode Galaxies will be available, although TDD-LTE's worldwide reach (including the US) suggests that the smartphones could soon be commonplace.

Facebook begins rolling out embedded posts, starting with major media partners

Facebook begins rolling out embedded posts

Facebook has plenty of options for integrating with sites across the web. In fact, its share and like buttons were very much at the forefront of the social widget revolution. But, while its friends at Instagram have been enjoying embeddable posts since early this month, Facebook has had no comparable capabilities. That small, but obvious, advantage enjoyed by Twitter and Vine is finally disappearing, however. Today the popular social network and personal data gold mine unveiled Embedded Posts, which enable anyone to place interactive widgets on a page that contain images, links, update text and even clickable hashtags. Obviously, you can also like a post or follow the source account right from the embedded content. The feature is rolling out slowly, with CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, PEOPLE and Mashable the first to have it turned on for their accounts. Facebook promises that broader availability will be coming soon, but it my be awhile before personal accounts can start embedding public posts all over the web.

UK government considering fines for drivers wearing Google Glass

UK government considering fines for drivers wearing Google Glass

Wondering what West Virginia and Britain have in common? This. After hearing that a bill in WV would outlaw Google Glass for motorists in the state, a new report from Stuff suggests that the United Kingdom is considering something comparable. A Department for Transport spokesperson was quoted as saying the following:

"We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the Police to ensure that individuals do not use this technology while driving. It is important that drivers give their full attention to the road when they are behind the wheel and do not behave in a way that stops them from observing what is happening on the road."

He went on to affirm that a range of penalties already exist in order to punish drivers who aren't "paying proper attention to the road," and while a law has yet to be passed targetting Glass specifically, it certainly sounds as if that type of modification is on the table. Silver lining? North Korea has yet to issue a similarly depressing condemnation of the headset.

Vodafone UK brings unlimited talk, text and data to Red Freedom Freebee plans

Vodafone UK adds unlimited talk, text and data to Red Freedom Freebee plans

These days, carriers seem to be gravitating towards "less for more" -- as in, giving users less while charging more. For those situated in the UK, however, Vodafone's offering up a new pay-as-you-go arrangement that actually smacks of value. The Red Freedom Freebee plans are pretty simple. For instance, £30 a month nets you unlimited texts and talk within the United Kingdom coupled with 1GB of data. Cough up £40 each month, and that data cap doubles to 2GB. A couple of cheaper plans are available for those who need little more than text messaging and enough data to keep tabs on their email, all of which can be seen in detail at Vodafone's site.

Mercedes-Benz GL 500 SUV sighted at JPJ Putrajaya

mercedes-benz-gl500-jpj-0004

Is the Mercedes-Benz ML 350 going to be joined by its big brother soon? Our usual ‘JPJ correspondent’ Anol Alias sighted this Mercedes-Benz GL 500 4MATIC at the JPJ Putrajaya car park for the usual approval, and the order sheet on the window shows this isn’t a grey market car.

This GL-Class is the second generation X166, first unveiled in the second half of last year. It’s made in the USA, the land of the SUV. The GL 500 model is powered by a 4.7 litre twin turbocharged V8 engine producing 408 PS and a massive 600Nm of torque from 1,600rpm up to 4,750rpm.

mercedes-benz-gl500-jpj-0010

It’s one class larger than the likes of the ML-Class or the X5 – think of it as a German Toyota Land Cruiser. It’s got 7 seats in three rows, or 5 with a massive cargo space if you prefer it that way. This particular unit is painted in a shade called Canvasit Blue, and it appears to be wearing an AMG Sport bodykit as well, which comes with more aggressive bumpers with large air intakes.

If launched here, the GL 500 is likely going to be a pretty high end product, and will cost a pretty penny in terms of road tax as well. There’s a GL with a smaller engine called the GL 350 but it uses a 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine, and we know Mercedes-Benz Malaysia doesn’t do diesels just yet.

With the ML 350 priced at RM570k here, expect the GL 500 with both an upgrade in terms of body and engine size to cost significantly more.
