SPIED: Volkswagen Beetle R spotted near the ‘Ring

If, for some strange reason, you find a 200 PS Beetle 2.0 TSI insufficient, there will soon be a hotter Bug you can choose. Tipped to be called the Volkswagen Beetle R, the new super Bug could get the latest Golf R Mk7’s 300 PS/380 Nm 2.0 litre turbo four, or at least the Mk6’s 270 PS/350 Nm motor.

Also unknown is whether it’ll get the Golf R’s Haldex 4MOTION all-wheel drive system or, like the Scirocco R, offer the same amount of power exclusively through the front wheels. Either way, that would add a serious dose of speed to the Beetle. No, this won’t be your daughter’s car; it’ll be yours.

Ignore the sporty bodykit on this test mule – that’s the optional R-Line kit readily available in international markets. When it goes on sale towards the end of 2014, expect the hot new car to look more like the Beetle R Concept that was shown in Frankfurt three years ago.
