Daihatsu Ayla GT, Luxury and X-Sport concepts

It’s raining concepts here at Daihatsu’s IIMS 2013 stand. Making their world debuts here in Jakarta, the Daihatsu Ayla GT, Luxury and X-Track concept trio is a crowd favourite, drawing in more show goers than the most extravagant supercars.

It’s easy to see why – the three models represent the possible aesthetic variations for the affordable Ayla city car. These are not concept cars in the most traditional sense, rather mere dressed up versions of a production car that’s already on sale.

Thousands will buy the affordable, LCGC-compliant Ayla, no doubts about it. But it looks as cheap as it actually is, which detracts some of its appeal. Some may hold off from buying it based on looks alone, even if the car itself is exactly what is wanted and/or needed.

These three concepts’ true reason for existence, then, is to prove to Indonesian car buyers that the Ayla can look more sporty (GT), elegant (Luxury) or adventurous (X-Track), if given a bit of work. It’s a job well done, by the looks of it.

The Daihatsu Ayla GT Concept is a funny take on a sporty Ayla. It’s clearly ‘inspired’ by the old Ford Focus RS, sporting a similar front intake, blistered wheel-arches and rear diffuser with twin exhaust exits. Discreet, it isn’t, but it’s a crowd puller.

Looking the most normal of the three is the Ayla Luxury Concept. The name says it all, really – it’s meant to be a premium version of the small car. There’s lots of chrome-work, and the front grille certainly has Audi’s signature all over it. The deep, pearlescent green paintwork helps too.

The last one – a personal favourite of mine – is the Ayla X-Track Concept. Styled like a mini-crossover, it sports SUV-style black body cladding and a raised ride height. The Alfa Romeo “phone dial” wheels look gorgeous too, don’t you think?

So there you have it. Three concept vehicles that are not exactly design studies as the term would suggest, but each with more genuine appeal than most show cars. What do you think of these three?
