GALLERY: Toyota Agya at IIMS – cheap, green city car

Here’s a small gallery of the Toyota Agya city car, the company’s entry to the Low-Cost and Green Car (LCGC) programme that’s dominating the local automotive industry news in Indonesia. It debuted at IIMS 2012, before going on sale two weeks ago upon the finalisation of the government-led LCGC policy.

The small Toyota will soon be a common sight in Indonesia with a sales target or 5,000 units per month. The country remains predominantly an MPV market, however, with the Toyota Avanza – by far the best-selling model there – commanding a major 20% market share of all passenger vehicles sold (approximately 20,000 units per month).

Affordability will be the Agya’s main selling point, making use of the tax breaks offered under the LCGC regulation. Prices range from just under 100 million rupiah (below RM28,000 at current exchange rate) to 120 million rupiah (around RM33,000) across six model variants: E, G and TRD-S, each with either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto ‘box.

Unlike its cheaper Daihatsu Ayla twin (RM21,000 and above), essentials such as power steering, air-con and dual airbags are standard across the range. A USB 2-DIN audio unit, digital multi information display, 14-inch alloy wheels, foglamps and various chrome bits are added on in the more expensive variants. The Toyota Agya Daihatsu Ayla is powered by a 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine that makes 65 hp at 6,000 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. Toyota claims an average fuel efficiency of 21 km per litre, aided by its 740 kg kerb weight.

As the LCGC policy dictates the use of specific Indonesian names, both models carry Sanskrit-sourced monikers. ‘Agya’ means ‘fast’ while ‘Ayla’ translates to ‘light’ in the traditional language. Looking at the specifications, it appears that Daihatsu is more forthcoming than its parent company :)
